The History, the Legacy, the Success! ©
NEW YORK, NY - Founded in 2004; incorporated in 2008, by child musical prodigy J Charles E Brown we are the James Smooth Music & Leadership Institute (JSMLI INC), a program that offers students the chance to participate in various instrumental music ensembles. We are a tool that schools can use to increase student participation in arts based activities. We specialize in beginning, intermediate, and advanced level instrumental music courses.... JSMLI’s band staff has a 10-year history of providing high-quality instrumental music instruction services to youth populations nationwide.
JSMLI has created a revolutionary approach to inner-city music by creating competitive marching band programs for students residing in New York City. JSMLI’s music programs have received various 1st place and grand champion awards and recognition in the 4A Classification of High-Stepping Marching Bands nationally. In addition to music based instruction JSMLI offers student leadership courses, which teach students how to plan for college, & set and attain goals for life.
Our history as a vendor for the New York City Department of Education is noteworthy. JSMLI has lead students in field/parade competition, concerts, special appearances and even movie shoots. The quality of our instruction, our unique approach and pedagogy; as well our track record for success solidify our status as a sole provider of high quality instrumental music services in NYC.
JSMLI is committed to:
The reduction of juvenile delinquency through operational efficiencies in the performing arts. JSMLI will provide a safe haven where students can thrive in an exciting atmosphere. Through our collaborative activity, we will display the talents of youth to their parents, friends, and to the community. We will motivate youth to have regular attendance in school, teach self-discipline, and provide students with the tools they will need to organize for academic success. JSMLI will strive to offer students a music program which is aligned with the NYC Arts Blueprint and New York State Teaching Standards.
In May 2017, J Charles E Brown stepped down as Chief Executive Officer of JSMLI INC, this decision came at time when the Institute no longer had the support from the community it needed to offer it's award winning music programs to New York City Students. J Charles E Brown has given JSMLI INC, the foundation the authority to accept donations in the hope that one day we will raise enough capital to once again allow him to teach his award winning programs. Previously, J Charles E Brown donated so much of his personal income that our programs were able to fund 300+ piece music ensembles. J Charles E Brown was diagnosed with Epilepsy, and though he is very high functioning, it should be understood and respected that his decision to step away from JSMLI INC at this time is the best decision for him. All hope is not lost, he will return one day and this is not possible without the tools and resources he needs as well as a need.
Mr. Brown currently serves as drum major of Saffron United Pipe Band & the Kings County Pipe Band where he competes and performs through the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association. This is a continuation of his original training, which stems from a family tradition, six generations living. Prior to founding JSMLI INC, Mr. Brown competed and performed with the Western United States Pipe Band Association as drum major of the City of Sacramento Pipe Band.
